The lone orca who lived among people

Early 2003 I had a powerful dream.

I dreamed I was standing at a dock watching a young orca situated between boats moored at a harbour I had never seen before in real life. Upon waking up, right away I contacted a friend and let him know what I had dreamed. That week photos of an orca at a dock surfaced on the internet. The images matched my dream. From there I investigated the subject independently and cooperated with stewardship to care for the solitary orca Luna L98 living in Nookta Sound. And from there began the most powerful journey and story of my life.

Who is Luna?

Luna (L-98, Tsuxiit), is the juvenile male killer whale from the endangered southern resident community of orcas who had been living alone and away from his pod for more than 5 years. He developed relationships with other species including humans. Luna died March 10 2006 when he was hit by a large tug.

During his life and after his death, L98 has come to mean many things to humans. His life and story teaches us to ask new questions not just about killer whales but about all life. His story is universal; Love
